Article: 10 Keys to Finding Your Purpose and Achieving Your Goals - By Kay L. Fontana *** ------------------------------------------------------------ Are you looking for a strategy to help you achieve your goals? Do you set goals, but never follow through with them? Do you have big dreams but don't know how to turn them into reality? At some point, you have probably heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. I tried this strategy a number of times and found the concept to be extremely helpful in terms of key elements to a goal one can achieve. However, I felt the method was missing some key components that would help me define what my goals should be, and how I was going to reach those goals. That's when I developed the POWERDRIVE to Success method. The following are 10 key ingredients to defining your goals and putting them into action: P -- Purpose. Your purpose in life has a significant correlation to your success in achieving goals. When you know what your purpose is in life, everything you do from that point forward that is directly related to your purpose, has value and meaning. Defining your life's purpose can be achieved by looking into key areas of your life: your dreams as a child, your values in life, your personality type preferences, your gifts and strengths, and your roles at home, work and in the community. These areas should be careful thought out in a discovery process, primarily because these elements may not be completely obvious to you. O -- Optimize your time. Understanding your internal clock and when you are most productive during the day can significantly affect how quickly you achieve your goals. Not everyone can rise in the early morning ready to tackle the biggest challenges. If you are a night owl, your most important tasks and projects may require time later in the day when you are at your peak. W -- Write it down. You must write down your intentions. Unless you write down your goals, you will probably not achieve them. Remember, out of sight -- out of mind. Your goals should include sub-goals and daily or weekly activities to maximize the process, and to ensure you are conducting yourself in a manner that leads to success. E -- Empower yourself. We all need to be empowered, but we must also learn to empower ourselves. Accepting responsibility for our own destiny and achieving our goals is empowering. When we allow others to steal our dreams, we risk giving in to our own negative self-talk and self-destructive behavior. R -- Release negative thoughts and fears. Our fears are often unrealistic and created from "dream stealers." Learning to control our negative thoughts can help us move forward with our goals. It's not always easy to confront dream stealers; however, by using a few strategies, you can reduce the risk of the dream stealers "getting into your head." Stay focused and positive. D -- Dream Big! What we want, we can have. So if your dreams are small, you will get small things. If you are going to dream, dream big so big things begin to happen. That is how world records are set and people do the unthinkable. Push yourself beyond what is expected and you will achieve remarkable things! R -- Relationships. Building relationships and connecting with people who see your vision and support your success helps you stay accountable for your actions. This brings greater success. When setting goals, invite friends, family, co-workers and others to share your vision, dreams and plan of action. They must, however, be positive and supportive in nature and sincerely interested in your success. I -- Immediate action. Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today? Procrastination is our enemy, so take action and do it now. V -- Visualize success. Have your dreams and goals visible to you everyday so you can be constantly reminded of what you want in life. Again, out of sight -- out of mind, so know what you want and visualize it daily. Using a vision or dream board, or writing your goals down where you can look at them frequently, can be of great value to you on your journey. These are reminders to stay focused on your goal. E -- Everyday. Success comes from creating daily positive habits that contribute to your success. Doing something every day toward your goals will only create success that much faster.
